The first meeting of the year held by the Meyerland Democrats Club was fabulous!
The meeting featured legend Frances “Sissy” Farenthold. Sissy Farenthold was the first woman elected to the TX House in 1968 and ran against the good ole boys twice for the governorship and was runner-up for vice president at the 1972 Democratic convention! Sissy Farenthold spoke about her groundbreaking work to bring women into government service.
The meeting also featured Rep. Carol Alvarado who was elected to the State House in 2008. Rep. Alvarado also served on the Houston City Council from 2002 to 2008 and as Mayor Pro Tem from 2004 to 2006. Rep. Alvarado spoke about her experience as a Hispanic woman in politics.
Genevieve Van Cleve, deputy political director of Annie’s List, spoke about the unique advantages and challenges of helping women run for office.
