January 16 to Feature
Women in Texas Politics
Our January 16th meeting will be a special one. We will have legend Frances “Sissy” Farenthold, the first woman elected to the TX House in 1968, who ran against the good ole boys twice for the governorship and was runner-up for vice president at the 1972 Democratic convention! Sissy Farenthold will talk about her groundbreaking work to bring women into government service.
Rep. Carol Alvarado was elected to the State House in 2008. She served on the Houston City Council from 2002 to 2008 and as Mayor Pro Tem from 2004 to 2006. Rep. Alvarado will talk about her experience as a Hispanic woman in politics.
Genevieve Van Cleve, deputy political director of Annie’s List, will talk about the unique advantages and challenges of helping women run for office.
The meeting will be held at Fadi’s Mediterranean Grill at 4738 Beechnut across from Meyerland Plaza. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. There is no charge to attend, but attendees pay for their own food and drinks.
