Sen. John Whitmire to Speak on Monday, May 21

"Dean of the Texas Senate" is also chair of Senate Criminal Justice Committee

The Houston area has a strong advocate in the Texas Senate with Sen. John Whitmire, who will speak at the Monday, May 21 meeting of the Meyerland Area Democrats Club.

Sen John WhitmireWith 28-plus years of service in the Texas Senate, Whitmire ranks first in seniority and is known as the body’s “dean.” He is chair of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee and works to bring about needed changes to the adult and juvenile criminal justice systems. He also serves as a member of additional crucial Senate Committees, including Finance, Business and Commerce, Government Organization, and Administration. Whitmire also serves on the Pension Review Board and the Texas Sunset Commission.

A native of Hillsboro, Texas, Whitmire moved to Houston where he graduated from Waltrip High School. He earned a B.A. degree from the University of Houston and attended Bates College of Law. He was admitted to the Texas State Bar in 1981 and is attorney of counsel to the law firm Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell LLP. Whitmire was elected to the Texas Senate in 1982 after serving 10 years in the Texas House of Representatives. In July 2005, Texas Monthly named Whitmire one of the ten best legislators in the 79th Texas Legislature.
